What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or fear that can affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. While it’s normal to feel anxious from time to time, people with anxiety disorders often experience these feelings more often and more intensely. This can make it hard to concentrate, relax, or handle everyday situations. Anxiety can affect anyone and may show up as restlessness, racing thoughts, irritability, impaired concentration, trouble sleeping, or physical symptoms like a fast heartbeat or upset stomach. With the right support, anxiety can be managed effectively.
Types of Anxiety
Anxiety can show up in different ways, and there are several types of anxiety disorders based on the symptoms a person experiences:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
People with GAD often feel anxious or worried most of the time, even when there’s no clear reason. They may worry about work, health, or everyday situations and often find it hard to relax.
Panic Disorder
This type involves sudden episodes of intense fear called panic attacks. These can come out of nowhere and include symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or feeling like something terrible is about to happen.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Also known as social phobia, this type involves intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected in social situations. People may avoid public speaking, meeting new people, or even everyday interactions.
Specific Phobias
This is when someone has an intense fear of a particular object or situation—like heights, flying, or spiders—that’s out of proportion to the actual danger.
