What Is Bipolar?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. People with bipolar disorder may experience episodes of depression—feeling very low, tired, or hopeless—and episodes of mania or hypomania, where they may feel unusually energetic, talkative, or impulsive. These mood changes can make daily life difficult, but with proper treatment and support, people with bipolar disorder can manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives
Types of Bipolar
Bipolar disorder includes several types, each defined by the pattern and severity of mood swings between depression and mania or hypomania:
Bipolar I Disorder
This type involves intense mood episodes that include full manic episodes lasting at least seven days or requiring hospitalization, often followed by periods of depression.
Bipolar II Disorder
Characterized by cycles of depression and hypomania, which is a less severe form of mania. People with Bipolar II don’t experience full manic episodes but still face significant mood shifts.
Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia)
A milder form of bipolar disorder involving frequent ups and downs that don’t meet full criteria for depression or mania but still impact daily life.
Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar Disorders
These include mood episodes that don’t fit the typical patterns of the main types but still involve significant mood fluctuations and require treatment.
Each type of bipolar disorder presents unique challenges, but with the right diagnosis and personalized treatment, it can be effectively managed.
