What Is An Eating Disorder?

An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition involving unhealthy relationships with food, body image, and eating behaviors. Common types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. These conditions can lead to severe physical and emotional distress, including extreme dieting, purging, or uncontrollable overeating. Individuals may struggle with low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and a strong fear of weight gain. Eating disorders often interfere with daily life and overall well-being, but with proper eating disorder treatment—including care from an experienced psychiatrist—recovery is possible through personalized support, medication management, and therapy

Types Of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can take many forms, and different types are diagnosed based on the specific thoughts, behaviors, and symptoms a person experiences:

Anorexia Nervosa
Marked by extreme food restriction, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image. Individuals often have dangerously low body weight and may see themselves as overweight, even when underweight.

Bulimia Nervosa
Involves cycles of binge eating followed by purging behaviors such as vomiting, fasting, or excessive exercise. People with bulimia often maintain a normal weight but experience intense guilt and shame around eating.

Binge Eating Disorder
The most common eating disorder, characterized by regularly eating large amounts of food in a short time, often in secret. Unlike bulimia, there are no purging behaviors afterward.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
Involves limited eating due to sensory sensitivity, fear of choking, or a general lack of interest in food. It can lead to nutritional deficiencies and weight loss, but it’s not driven by body image concerns.

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
A diagnosis for disordered eating that doesn’t fit the criteria for other specific disorders but still causes significant physical and emotional distress.
