What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While it’s normal to feel distress after such events, people with PTSD often continue to experience intense thoughts, emotions, or physical reactions long after the danger has passed. These symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, irritability, and trouble sleeping or concentrating. PTSD can affect anyone and may significantly impact daily life—but with the right treatment and support, it can be managed effectively

Types of PTSD

PTSD can affect people in different ways, and there are several types based on how symptoms show up and what caused the trauma:

Acute PTSD
This type occurs within the first month after a traumatic event. Symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety may appear quickly but last less than three months.

Chronic PTSD
When symptoms persist for more than three months, it’s considered chronic. It can develop right after the trauma or emerge later, often becoming more intense over time.

Delayed-Onset PTSD
Symptoms don’t appear until at least six months after the traumatic event. This type can be especially confusing, as the person may seem fine at first before symptoms begin to surface.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
This form is usually caused by prolonged or repeated trauma—such as ongoing abuse or captivity. In addition to typical PTSD symptoms, individuals may struggle with emotional regulation, relationships, and self-worth.

Each type of PTSD requires a tailored treatment approach, but recovery is possible with the right care and support.
